Lu (Sugar & Snark)

Life of Pi was a very unique read that I adored. Pi is a very religious boy/young man who loves God, but his own idealistic God – he therefore combines 3 large religions and refuses to choose just one. Although I am not religious I respect his choices and I understand that throughout this novel he needed something larger than himself to grab onto and believe. I also loved when he talked about religion and explained his feelings. It was so pure and innocent and I felt like I understood Pi better for it.I know a lot of emphasis was put on the religion in this novel, but I have to say that it didn’t bother me. I found it only added to Pi’s character and I certainly didn’t feel that any religion was being pushed down my throat.Pi sets out on an unexpected adventure where he lands in a lifeboat with not just a Tiger, but some other animals as well (you have to read it to believe it). He gets to see humanity in a rare form and his base human instincts is all he has to rely on. Well that and a survival manual!The setting isn’t very vast as you can imagine, but Yann Martel writes such a multifaceted story that the lifeboat feels like a world on its own. And although the pacing was a little slow in the beginning it eventually went a bit smoother and I felt like I was reading an old friend by the middle.What he sees and experiences and especially the fantastic ending left me wanting more and I hope it does you too!
